Hadoop Summit and all hail screen sharing!

Presenting for the first time at Hadoop Summit was a serious thrill and this was just Day 1!  Just as a refresher, Dave Mariani (@dmarini) from Klout and I got the awesome opportunity to present How Klout is changing the landscape of social media with Hadoop and BI (session info | meet the presenters).  It was fun to talk about how Klout uses Flume, Scala, node.js, Hadoop/Hive, and AJAX to work together with an Analysis Services cube to gain powerful insight.  Our theme: Hadoop and BI – better together   As well, it was great to meet so many of…

BI and Big Data–the best of both worlds!

As part of the excitement of the Strata Conference this week, Microsoft has been talking about Big Data and Hadoop.  It started off with Dave Campbell’s question: Do we have the tools we need to navigate the New World of Data?.  And some of the tooling call outs specific to Microsoft include references to PowerPivot, Power View, and the Hadoop JavaScript framework (Hadoop JavaScript– Microsoft’s VB shift for Big Data). As noticed by GigaOM’s article Microsoft’s Hadoop play is shaping up, and it includes Excel; the great call out is: to make Hadoop data analyzable via both a JavaScript framework…

Hadoop JavaScript– Microsoft’s VB shift for Big Data

One of the cool things about the Hadoop on Azure CTP is its Interactive JavaScript Console – it allows users query and visualize data on top HDFS using a JavaScript framework.  For example, below is a graph pie visualization within a browser generated by the Interactive JavaScript console using graph.pie function. Why is this important and cool at the same time?  As one can note with amazing projects like node.js, JavaScript is being seen by many as its own first class programming / application language: The rise of Node.js: JavaScript graduates to the server. In the realm of Big Data,…

It’s all about the little things…on the inside!

For some people, small, beautiful events is what life is all about! — Doctor Who: Earthshock, Peter Davison as the 5th Doctor (Story 122)             A tad off course, but today, I was just wow’ed by my Apple Magic Touch mouse. Why do you ask? Because of the beauty of industrial design and the wonderful merge of function and form.  The mouse itself is quite sleek and low profile and I like using the multi-gesture swipes all within the the comfort of a few finger moves.   But the thing that got my attention…

You know that I’m tired when…

Sorry that I haven’t blogged in awhile, but there’s lots of interesting things happening these days all in prep for the SQLPASS summit, eh?!  It’s been long nights and lots of fun chaos! Saying this, you know that I’m tired when… you’re getting <3h of sleep / night you’re running all of your team meetings via conference calls from your car you walk into a customer executive briefing wearing shorts realized my Mandarin Chinese is so bad that I’m learning new words while watching “Ni Hao, Kai Lan” was actively thinking about joining sales was losing a real debate with…

“Hadoop: A movement, not just a technology”

Note, the title of this post (and for that matter, most of this post) is a direct quote from Kovas Boguta’s post: Hadoop & Startups: Where Open Source Meets Business Data. Amy: Please tell me you have a plan. The Doctor: No, I have a thing. It’s like a plan, but with more greatness .   For starters, I highly suggest you read this insightful article about Hadoop and Big Data by Kovas Boguta: Hadoop & Startups: Where Open Source Meets Business Data. It is a great article and I would also like to call out that this new way of…

Oh Vancouver…hockey has changed you

It is a sad shame to see our sister city, beautiful Vancouver, go into riot lockdown because of a hockey game (albeit an important one). Riots in Vancouver after Canucks lose Stanley Cup After all, this is the world’s most liveable city and I would agree with it.  I live in Seattle – love Seattle and will probably never leave the emerald city – but freely admit the beauty of Vancouver and often jealous of its great transportation system,  love the fact that the city is in the mountains, startled by its amazing views, and hunger for its many great…
